In this paper I explore the doctrine of the scala naturae in Ralph Cudworth (1617-1688) as mediated by Plotinus and Proclus and its reception in the Anglo- American world in the 19th century. This model of the hierarchical ordering of the universe attained striking expression in the early English philosopher Ralph Cudworth’s opus magnum, The True Intellectual System of the Universe (1678), a work that constituted the foundation of British Idealism and bequeathed a powerful legacy well into the 20th century.
